We know for many, traditional vacations were taken off the table this year. So we know a lot of families will be taking off to camp at nearby lakes or to find a quiet place to enjoy some get-away time before the hustle and bustle of school starts back. Your CareXpress Urgent Care staff has come up with a list of camping safety tips to share with you.
Tip #1- Plan safe activities.
Know your limitations and choose safe activities for you and your family. For example, if you’re not used to hiking long distances, climbing large hills, or water skiing all day long, you need to select activities that will match your experience level and health. Don’t try to over-do anything just because it’s a camping trip. Hiking, walking, and swimming can keep you active, but be sure to bring the right protective gear with you, like tennis shoes, helmets, life jackets, fresh water, and lots of sunscreen!
Tip #2- Keep an eye out for poisonous plants.
Wherever there are wooded areas, there is bound to be poison ivy, poison oak, and/ or poison sumac. Avoiding these plants is the best prevention, but if you happen to get a rash that’s unfamiliar, check in with one of our urgent care clinics for rash treatment options.
Tip #3- Beware of insects, arachnids, and other bugs.
When camping, it’s tough to avoid insects like wasps, bees, biting flies, or mosquitoes. Ticks, part of the arachnid family, are one of the most common problems in tall grassy and wooded areas, and they can carry blood-borne illnesses. To repel many creepy, crawly creatures, remember to pack a bug repellent for everyone to wear.
We hope you enjoy your rest and relaxation among nature. If you have camping plans at any point other this year, have fun and be safe!
